Background of the Study

Mobile applications (apps) have become integral tools in the educational sector, offering innovative ways to engage students and improve learning experiences. In nursing education, mobile apps provide a unique opportunity to supplement traditional learning by offering students easy access to learning materials, clinical guidelines, video tutorials, and interactive case studies. The University of Abuja School of Nursing has begun to incorporate mobile technology into its nursing programs, acknowledging the growing reliance on smartphones and mobile devices among students. Mobile applications can foster a flexible learning environment, enabling students to study at their own pace and access educational content beyond the classroom (Musa & Suleiman, 2023).

Studies suggest that mobile apps in nursing education can improve knowledge retention, increase engagement, and enhance clinical decision-making skills (Nwokedi et al., 2024). Furthermore, mobile learning has been shown to increase student participation, promote collaborative learning, and provide real-time access to healthcare information. Despite the potential benefits, there are challenges such as the need for reliable internet access, the cost of mobile devices, and students' varying levels of digital literacy, which may affect the successful integration of mobile apps in nursing education.

This study aims to evaluate the role of mobile applications in enhancing nursing students’ learning experiences at the University of Abuja School of Nursing, focusing on their impact on student engagement, learning outcomes, and clinical skills development.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the increasing adoption of mobile applications in education, there is limited research on their specific impact on nursing students' learning experiences in Nigerian nursing schools. While mobile apps have the potential to enhance learning by providing interactive tools and access to a wide range of resources, the effectiveness of these apps in nursing education remains underexplored. At the University of Abuja School of Nursing, the integration of mobile applications has faced challenges such as inconsistent access to technology, students' low levels of familiarity with some apps, and a lack of structured training on how to utilize mobile apps for learning. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate how mobile applications are being utilized and their effectiveness in enhancing nursing students' learning experiences.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the role of mobile applications in enhancing nursing students’ engagement and learning outcomes at the University of Abuja School of Nursing.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness of mobile applications in supporting the development of clinical competencies among nursing students.

3. To identify the challenges faced by nursing students in using mobile applications for learning at the University of Abuja School of Nursing.

Research Questions

1. How do mobile applications enhance nursing students' engagement and learning outcomes at the University of Abuja School of Nursing?

2. What is the effectiveness of mobile applications in supporting the development of clinical competencies among nursing students?

3. What challenges do nursing students face in using mobile applications for learning at the University of Abuja School of Nursing?

Research Hypotheses

1. Mobile applications significantly enhance nursing students’ engagement and learning outcomes at the University of Abuja School of Nursing.

2. Mobile applications effectively support the development of clinical competencies among nursing students at the University of Abuja School of Nursing.

3. Nursing students face significant challenges in using mobile applications for learning at the University of Abuja School of Nursing.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on nursing students at the University of Abuja School of Nursing, evaluating the role of mobile applications in enhancing their learning experiences, engagement, and clinical competencies. Limitations of the study include potential biases in self-reported data, the challenge of measuring clinical skills through mobile applications, and possible discrepancies in internet access and device availability among students.
